Advice For Aspiring Authors…"On Writing" by Stephen King

This post is outside what I normally write on this blog; however, this is something I would like to share with those of you aspiring to become an author (like me).

If you are not sure where to start or just not sure if writing is right for you, consider reading "On Writing" by the great Stephen King. It’s part memoir so he uses past experiences to explain how he developed the tools he feels are needed to be a good author.

He's honest. At times, brutally honest. While I was reading, every belief I have was challenged and every emotion was affected in some way.  At times I was so overcome by emotion, I cried.

Really, you ask? Cried while reading Stephen King? Strangely enough, it’s true.  Reading about the obstacles he overcame growing up and into adulthood, the love and respect he has for his wife and how supportive she’s been in his career is powerful stuff.  So, when he finally got his big break, I was so happy for him that I cried. An all out ugly-cry too. Not just the welling up or a single tear.

An author friend told me a little while back that everything I needed to know about writing is in that book. Now I see what she meant.

His book affected me on such a profound level, that I thought I would share with anyone thinking about going down this road as I am.  And truthfully, published authors would find some benefit as well.

If you do pick it up to read, come back and let me know what you thought. I'd love to hear if you were affected by it like I was.

Happy Reading!

  2. I LOVE this book, and have reread sections of it many times. Stephen King is inspirational with his bare honesty. Best wishes with your writing, but I warn it... it can quickly become an addiction. :-)
